Figaro Chain Men UK 2026: How to Wear It Right

Informational + Commercial

Run a finger along a Cuban chain and the rhythm under your fingertip is steady: link, link, link, link, all the same. Do the same on a Figaro chain and the rhythm changes: long, short-short-short, long, short-short-short.

Fine silver chain men flat lay

The Monrich Team · 8 min read · 2026/10

That broken pattern is the whole reason the Figaro chain exists. Italian jewellers in 19th-century Genoa wanted a chain with visual rhythm rather than uniform repetition. They named the style after the character Figaro from Mozart’s opera “The Marriage of Figaro”, a witty barber-servant who outsmarts his master through trickery. The chain became the most popular Italian men’s style of the 1970s and 1980s, especially in solid 18K gold, worn by mafia kingpins and Italian football players alike.

By the 2000s the Figaro had drifted out of fashion in favour of Cuban chains and rope chains. It returned quietly in the mid-2010s as a way for men who’d already worn a Cuban to differentiate. By 2026 the Figaro sits as one of the most distinctive men’s chain patterns available, recognisable in any light, and a clear style statement when worn correctly.

This is the UK buying and styling guide.

Background: I founded Monrich, a UK men’s jewellery brand. I see this category from inside, which is part of how I read other brands.

You can see the current figaro & wheat chains line-up for reference as you read.

Section 01

What is a Figaro chain?

Thin silver chain styled with cream jacket

A Figaro chain is a flat link chain with a distinctive pattern: one elongated oval link followed by 2 or 3 shorter circular links, repeated continuously. The pattern creates a visual rhythm down the chain length that distinguishes it from uniform-link chains.

Origins: developed in Italy in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Named after the character Figaro from Mozart’s opera. Became a popular men’s chain style across Europe in the early-to-mid 20th century.

Section 02

Pattern variations (1+3, 1+2)

1+3 Figaro (most common)

One long link followed by three short links. The classic Figaro pattern, most often seen in men’s chains.

1+2 Figaro

One long link followed by two short links. Less common, has slightly different visual rhythm.

1+1 Figaro

One long link followed by one short link (alternating). Sometimes called “fancy curb” because it’s similar to a curb chain with varying link sizes. Less distinctly Figaro.

For first Figaro: 1+3 pattern is the standard and most recognisable.

How to wear

Solo

The Figaro pattern is distinctive enough that the chain works alone without needing to be paired with a pendant. The pattern itself is the visual interest.

With pendant

A pendant on a Figaro chain reads differently than on a curb or Cuban. The chain has more visual character, so a simple pendant works best (cross, dog tag) rather than ornate.

Layered

Figaro layers well with Cuban (texture / pattern contrast). Less ideal with rope chain (visual patterns can compete).

Smart casual

Figaro chain at 3-4mm is appropriate for smart casual settings. The pattern adds visual interest without going full streetwear.

Streetwear

Figaro chains at 5-7mm widths work for streetwear. Less common than Cuban at the same widths but more distinctive.

Specific outfit pairings

Smart-casual (button-down shirt + chinos): a 4mm Figaro chain at 22 inches sits perfectly above an open collar. The pattern reads as “this guy chose this chain on purpose”, which works better than a generic Cuban in this context.

Streetwear (hoodie + denim): a 5-6mm Figaro chain reads less hip-hop than a Cuban. Some buyers prefer this. It signals individuality.

Italian / Mediterranean look (linen shirt, summer suit): the Figaro is the historical Italian chain. Wearing a Figaro with linen and warm tones is a coherent style choice.

Layered with a Cuban: Cuban at 20 inches + Figaro at 24 inches. The Cuban gives the modern statement, the Figaro adds texture without competing.

Section 07

Who actually wears a Figaro in 2026?

Two main audiences. The first: men 35+ who remember the chain from the 1980s or own an inherited piece. For them, the Figaro is a return to a classic they recognise.

The second: men 22-30 who want to step away from the saturated Cuban chain market. They’ve seen Cuban chains everywhere on Instagram for the last 5 years. The Figaro offers a similar amount of visual presence in a less-everywhere pattern.

For first-time buyers who want a chain that’s recognisable but not the same chain everyone else wears, the Figaro is the answer.

Section 08

Figaro vs Cuban vs rope

The Figaro sits between Cuban (dense uniform) and rope (twisted texture) in style code.

Aspect Figaro Cuban Rope
Link pattern Varying (1+3) Uniform interlocked Twisted spiral
Visual rhythm High (pattern is the feature) Even, dense Spiraling texture
Cultural code Classic European / 70s-90s revival Universal, modern Classic / refined
Statement level Moderate (the pattern is the statement) Moderate-high (depends on width) Moderate
Best layered with Cuban Rope, tennis Cuban

Care

PVD-plated Figaro chains require essentially no maintenance. Wear them daily including shower, gym, sweat. The plating is designed for this exposure.

Electroplated Figaro chains benefit from a few care habits. The varying link sizes mean slightly more wear at the long-link / short-link junctions. Wipe daily with a microfiber cloth. Apply parfum before putting the chain on. Limit shower exposure if you want more than 4 months of original colour.

Sterling silver Figaro chains develop a warm patina over time. Some buyers prefer this for the Italian / Mediterranean aesthetic. If you want mirror finish, polish with a silver cloth every 2-3 months.

The Figaro pattern can occasionally catch on rough clothing (rough wool sweaters, certain hoodies). Not a daily issue but worth noting if the chain catches: don’t pull, untangle gently.

FAQ

What is the pattern of a Figaro chain?

The most common Figaro is the 1+3 pattern: one long oval link followed by three short circular links, repeated. Other variations (1+2, 1+1) exist but 1+3 is the most recognised.

Why is it called Figaro?

The chain is named after the character Figaro from Mozart’s opera “The Marriage of Figaro” (1786). The Italian craftsmen who developed the pattern in the late 1800s used the name as a cultural reference. The chain pattern was considered “operatic” because of its visual rhythm.

Is Figaro a vintage style?

Yes, the Figaro chain has classic / vintage roots dating back over 100 years. It saw peak popularity in the 1970s and 1980s in European men’s jewellery. The 2020s have seen the chain return as part of broader vintage revival in men’s accessories.

Is a Figaro chain in style for men?

Yes. Figaro chains are an established men’s chain style that has been continuously popular since the early 20th century. Less trendy than Cuban but timelessly relevant.

What width Figaro should I get?

4-5mm for everyday wear. 6-7mm for statement / streetwear.

How long should my Figaro chain be?

20-22 inches for standard men’s wear. The pattern is most visible at mid-chest length.

Can I wear a Figaro chain with a pendant?

Yes. The pattern of the chain works well with simple pendants (cross, dog tag, signet pendant). Avoid ornate / decorative pendants which can compete with the chain pattern.

How much should I spend on a Figaro chain?

For daily wear PVD-plated: £45-130. For premium sterling: £180-350. For investment solid gold: £600-2800.
